Holmes is a search accelerator for e-commerce, developed and marketed by neuland – Büro für Informatik (Bremen) and Tudock (Hamburg). Unlike traditional SaaS search products, Holmes is not an off-the-shelf platform with a fixed feature roadmap, but rather a baseline set of functionality built on established open-source search technologies such as Solr and PostgreSQL — tailored to specific requirements within the scope of individual projects. The package includes an API-first architecture, a back-office tool for configuration, and a foundational set of features for professional e-commerce search.
Typical use cases are demanding B2B scenarios involving deeply structured product catalogs, customer-specific assortments and pricing, and complex ERP/PIM/CRM integrations — for which standard SaaS solutions are often too inflexible. Integration effort depends heavily on the individual project: because Holmes is designed consistently as an accelerator approach, engagements usually begin with a custom project involving one of the vendors as the implementation partner.
Holmes can be deployed either on-premise or in a private/public cloud, making it a good fit for companies that place particularly high value on data protection. One notable distinction is its certification with the Blue Angel ecolabel for software — Holmes is the first commercial solution of any kind to carry this environmental certification.
Holmes deliberately positions itself as a counter-model to the international SaaS heavyweights: instead of a standardized platform with a fixed roadmap, neuland and Tudock offer an accelerator designed to address the typical weaknesses of generic search solutions — particularly where conventional solutions reach their limits. The approach appeals above all to retailers in the DACH region who place value on ownership, data sovereignty, and customization. The reference list of neuland and Tudock featuring companies such as FRICKE/GRANIT PARTS, Sonepar, Breuninger, OBI, dm, Douglas, and Manufactum is impressive, but in terms of international visibility it clearly trails the major SaaS providers. Holmes is not a replacement for Algolia and other providers in classic B2C scenarios, but rather a serious option wherever SaaS runs into functional or regulatory limits. For matching requirement profiles, Holmes belongs on the shortlist — especially when you are looking for a highly capable implementation partnership at the same time.
